Can the ref ask for VAR?
The referee can call for the VAR to review a decision during a game. Or VAR can alert the referee to a "clear and obvious" error that has taken place, involving either a goal, a penalty decision, a direct red card or case of mistaken identity.
Can the referee overrule?
No. The final decision is always taken by the on-field referee.
What is the difference between a referee and an assistant referee?
All decisions by the assistant referees are only advisory to the referee; their decisions are not binding and the referee is allowed to overrule an assistant. An assistant referee may also be called upon by the referee to provide an opinion regarding matters which the referee requires clarification on.
Can the assistant referee overrule the referee?
In short, no. VAR can not overturn the final whistle. Once the referee has blown the whistle to signal the end of the match, that is it – the game is over and VAR can not change that fact. However, there are a couple of scenarios in which VAR can intervene after the final whistle has been blown.
