Re: Continue + infinitive or ing Yes, according to my grammar book continue + ing is used for the continuation of an activity and continue + infinitive is used for a change to a new activity. Ex : She went on talking about her illness for hours. Then she went on to talk about her other problems. Any other explanations?
What verb comes after continue?
[ + to infinitive ] It's said that as the boat went down the band continued to play. [ + -ing verb ] If she continues drinking like that, I'll have to carry her home. Do you intend to continue (with) your studies?
When should I use to or ing?
The -ing form emphasises the verb itself. The to-infinitive puts the emphasis more on the preference for, or the results of, the action. I hate to be the only person to disagree. (emphasis more on the result: I would prefer not to be in that situation.)
Is continue an infinitive?
TO-infinitive or gerund: BEGIN, START, CONTINUE, CEASE, DREAD, INTEND, LOVE. These verbs can be followed by either a to -infinitive or a gerund with almost no difference in meaning: I began to learn languages when I was ten. He began using this software three years ago.
