Did Aeneas exist before Virgil?

The idea of Aeneas being the founder of Rome predates Virgil by many centuries. In fact, Rome is not the only place which claimed to have been founded by Aeneas. As early as the sixth century BC Aeneia in Macedonia was issuing coins showing Aeneas carrying his father from Troy.

Did Romans believe the Aeneid?

The Romans regarded the Aeneid as their great national epic, and it had enormous influence over later writers and thinkers. As well as being powerful literature, the Aeneid tells us a great deal about how the Romans saw themselves and their culture, and what it meant to be a Roman.

Is the Aeneid finished?

When was the Aeneid written? Virgil was still working on revising the Aeneid when he died in 19 BC. The poem contains a few lines which are only half as long as they should be, which confirms the traditional belief that the work is unfinished. The poem is not, however, incomplete; it was meant to end where it ends.

Did Ascanius found Rome?

Tradition attributes its founding (c. 1152 bc) to Ascanius, the son of the legendary Aeneas, thus making it, according to legend at least, the oldest Latin city, which in turn founded others, including Rome.
