What were Greek towns called?
A city-state, or polis, was the community structure of ancient Greece. Each city-state was organized with an urban center and the surrounding countryside. Characteristics of the city in a polis were outer walls for protection, as well as a public space that included temples and government buildings.
What cities are named after Greek gods?
Olympia was the city of Zeus, and held the Olympic games in his honour. Corinth was under the protection of the sea god Poseidon; Argos of the goddess Hera; Epidaurus of the god Asclepius; Delphi of the god Apollo.
What was Athena's city called?
She was widely worshipped, but in modern times she is associated primarily with Athens, to which she gave her name. Her emergence there as city goddess, Athena Polias (“Athena, Guardian of the City”), accompanied the ancient city-state's transition from monarchy to democracy.
