Marcus Tullius Tiro, a learned freedman who was a member of Cicero's household, invented the notae Tironianae (“Tironian notes”), the first Latin shorthand system. Devised in 63 bc, it lasted over a thousand years. Tiro also compiled a shorthand dictionary.
