What is partial devoicing?
Partial devoicing displays whisper of voicelessness at the beginning of the medial phase (initial devoicing) or at the end of the medial phase (final devoicing). Full devoicing: the entire medial phase is characterized by whisper of voicelessness.
What is devoicing of consonants?
In Russian pronunciation, all voiced consonants at the end of the word are pronounced like their voiceless counterparts. This phenomenon is also called consonant assimilation, or devoicing of consonants. Devoicing also occurs when a voiced consonant is in front of a voiceless consonant.
How does a voiceless consonant affect a preceding vowel?
(3) Vowels are shortened before voiceless consonants because the closing gesture is executed with more muscular force, hence with greater acceleration. The greater force is required to overcome the higher intraoral air pressure (owing to an open glottis) during the production of a voice- less stop or fricative.
