What is the accent rule in Greek?
Rule 1: There will always be an accent placed on one of the last three syllables in a Greek word. Antepenult: Third to last syllable. Penult: Second to last syllable. Ultima: Last syllable.
Why do some Greek words have two accents?
Monosyllabic words are naturally stressed when pronounced so we don't accentuate them, although there are a few exceptions. But sometimes, before some specific monosyllabic words, other monosyllabic words do get accented while some polysyllabic words get a second accent mark.
How do you know where to put accents in Greek?
The accent cannot come more than three syllables from the end of the word. If the last syllable of a word has a long vowel, or is closed by two consonants, the accent usually cannot come on the antepenultimate syllable; but within those restrictions it is free. In nouns the accent is largely unpredictable.
