In Vulgar Latin, pronouns like ego and tu slowly lost their emphasis and started being used more frequently. Likewise, ille and illa took on the roles of definite articles (as English 'the'), resulting in Italian il and la, French le and la and Spanish el and la. Grammatical gender was sometimes confused.
Did ancient Latin sound like Italian?
