What is sleep debt?
For example: a person needing 8 hours of sleep but getting only 6 would build a sleep debt of 2 hours that day. A person with an 8-hour sleep need who gets 6 hours each day for 5 days builds a sleep debt of 10 hours. As sleep debt builds, brain and body functioning deteriorate. Sleep is needed to “pay down” this debt.
Can you repay sleep debt?
Can you make up sleep debt? Yes. If you get 39 or fewer hours of sleep in one week, you have sleep deprivation. You need to get three to four extra hours of sleep over the course of a weekend, plus one to two extra hours of sleep every night for the following week to pay off that sleep debt.
Do naps help with sleep debt?
Naps may be particularly helpful for shift workers or people who can't maintain a consistent sleep schedule. Even a short power nap can refresh the rest of your day. Give it time: Remember that it can take days to recover from a sleep debt.
